FRÜHLINGSSEHNSUCHT
Säuselnde Lüfte wehend so mild,
Blumiger Düfte athmend erfüllt !
Wie haucht ihr mich wonnig begrüssend an !
Wie habt ihr dem pochenden Herzen gethan ?
Es möchte euch folgen auf luftiger Bahn !
Wohin ? Wohin ?
Bächlein, so munter rauschend zumal,
Wollen hinunter zilbern in’s Thal.
Die schwebende Welle, dort eilt sie dahin !
Tief spiegeln sich Fluren und Himmel darin.
Was ziehst du mich sehnend verlangender Sinn,
Hinab ? Hinab ?
Grüssender Sonne spielendes Gold,
Hoffende Wonne, bringest du hold !
Wie labt mich dein selig begrüssendes Bild !
Es lächelt am tiefblauen Himmel so mild
Und hat mir das Auge mit Thränen gefüllt, .
Warum ? Warum ?
Grünend umkränzet Wälder und Höh !
Schimmernd erglänzet Blüthenschnee !
So dränget sich Alles zum bräutlichen Licht ;
Es schwellen die Keime, die Knospe bricht ;
Sie haben gefunden, was ihnen gebricht,
Un du ? Un du ?
Rastloses Sehnen !wünschendes Herz,
Immer nur Thränen, Klage und Schmerz ?
Auch ich bin mir schwellender Triebe bewusst !
Wer stillet mir endlich die drängende Lust ?
Nur du befreist den Lenz in der Brust,
Nur du, Nur du ! |
LONGING IN SPRING
Murmuring breezes, soft thru the vale,
Breathing the fragrance flowers exhale !
How friendly you greet me, how gay depart !
And what have you done to this fluttering heart !
I wish I could follow you high thru the air,
Could follow you faithfully ah ! everywhere !
But where, But where ?
Brooklet, so happy, rippling so gay,
Taking your silver course to the bay.
The swiftflowing rivers go rushing on by,
Reflecting the meadows, the clouds and the sky.
They pour thru the valley and rush by the town,
And why, longing senses, do you pull me down ?
Ah why? Ah why ?
Sunrise that greets me, purple and gold,
Bringer of courage, fair to behold,
The bliss of your greeting refreshes my soul,
And smiles from the blue vault of Heavens wide bowl,
Renewing my courage and stilling my fears,
And filling my eyes with the comfort of tears.
And why ? And why ?
Forests and hills are wreathed all in green ;
Snow of the blossoms glitters between !
The earth is all teeming, with nature athirst
The seeds are all swelling, the buds all burst ;
Each one by the urge to creation is racked,
And each has discovered what he or she lacked.
And you ? And you ?
Restless and yearning, heart of desire,
Ever in anguish, ever on fire ?
I too am aware of the lifegiving urge
Who is there can still its importunate surge ?
You only can free the spring in my breast,
You only put my soul at rest,
But you, But you !
