Rückblick Looking back Regard en arrière
Hab’ mich an jedem Stein gestoßen,
So eilt’ ich zu der Stadt hinaus;
Die Krähen warfen Bäll’ und Schloßen
Auf meinen Hut von jedem Haus.
Wie anders hast du mich empfangen,
Du Stadt der Unbeständigkeit!
An deinen blanken Fenstern sangen
Under both my feet, it is burning hot
Although I tread on ice and snow
I would rather not take another breath
Until those turrets are out of sight.
I bruised myself on every stone
So much did I hurry to flee the town;
From every roof, the crows threw balls
And hailstones on my hat.
How differently did you welcome me
You, town of inconstancy!
At your sparkling windows, vying,
Nightingales and larks caroled.
The sturdy lime-trees were in bloom,
The clear streams babbled brightly.
Alas, two maiden eyes were glowing
That meant your end, my Lad!
Whenever that day comes to my mind,
I long to look back once more
And stumble back again
And stand, silent,
Outside her house.
Telle était ma hâte de fuir la ville;
De chaque toit, corbeaux, corneilles,
Faisaient bouler pierres et grêlons
Sur mon chapeau.
Bien différent avait été ton accueil,
Ô ville inconstante ! A tes riantes fenêtres,
L’alouette et le rossignol tireliraient
A qui mieux mieux.
Les ronds tilleuls étaient en fleurs,
Les clairs ruisseaux gazouillaient heureux,
Deux yeux de jeune fille, hélas, brillèrent
Et c’en fut fait de toi, mon ami !
Et quand cet instant me revient à l’esprit
Je voudrais encore le revivre,
Je voudrais revenir de mes pas chancelants
Jusqu’à me retrouver, silencieux,
Devant sa maison.
